The System Chain

The canonical relationship between Lookout, Blackline, Verdict, Structura, Balf, and the Codex that governs their interpretation.

The canonical system chain separates six different kinds of authority.

Lookout — observation

Lookout acquires evidence from reality and preserves provenance. It may report what was observed and how the record was produced. It does not determine what the evidence means.

Blackline — modelling

Blackline converts evidence into explicit system models. It represents state, uncertainty, relationships, and possible trajectories. It does not decide which trajectory should be chosen.

Verdict — evaluation

Verdict tests claims, options, policies, and consequences against declared criteria. It produces reasoned evaluations. It does not directly coordinate work or apply force.

Structura — coordination

Structura translates an authorised decision into actors, dependencies, tasks, interfaces, and checkpoints. It coordinates execution while preserving the originating decision and its constraints.

Balf — enforcement

Balf maintains boundaries, validates interventions, records consequential state transitions, and refuses unauthorised operation. Enforcement is narrow by design. Balf must never infer its own mandate from technical capability.

Codex — governance

Codex contains the definitions, rules, operators, authority references, and interpretation constraints used across the chain. It is not merely another sequential stage. It governs every stage.

Structural rule

No layer may silently absorb the authority of another.

  • Observation is not evaluation.
  • A model is not reality.
  • Evaluation is not authorisation.
  • Coordination is not enforcement.
  • Enforcement is not self-legitimating.
  • Codex is not evidence that its own rules are correct.

The separation makes each transformation inspectable and allows errors to be attributed to the layer that produced them.
